DEEP COVER [DVD R1]

Laurence (or Larry as he was known in 1992) Fishburne stars alongside Jeff Goldblum in this undercover thriller. Substituting a good plot for high budget, high action sequences pays off in this film as both central actors give fine performances. Fishburne, now more famous for his role as Morpheus in ‘The Matrix’, delivers an outstanding performance as the cop who has to go undercover to battle the drug scene.

The plot goes something like this…boy sees cocaine-addicted father shot dead in a very unsuccessful attempt at store robbery. Holding his father in his arms, the boy vows never to become a drug-addict. The boy grows up and becomes a police officer, obviously on some psychological level a reaction to his father’s death. Determined to "make a difference", Fishburne’s character is chosen to go undercover in the drug world to catch a barron who imports 40% of the current narcotics into LA.

The story continues to unfold, excellently showcasing the unease with which the Fishburne’s Russell Stevens is with his new environment. As the corruption of the police force unfolds it becomes clear that the moralities of all involved will be tested fully.

The climax of the film is a little predictable, however it is a Hollywood movie. What else should the film goer expect? Something that bucks the trend? No way. The producers have decided to play it safe.

The film contains a good soundtrack that adds to the mood and atmosphere that the direction does so well to uphold. The picture on the disc is solid and looks very good. But, for a film that is set in a very dark world, this should be the case.

There are no extras on the disc worthy of note, so you get the film in good quality and that’s it. If you own it on video, stay clear. If you like films that contain good storylines, this may be for you. However, if you’re on a tight budget look elsewhere, especially as this film as been on TV.

Rabbit's Rating: 6 for the film, 6 for the disc.
