SHOOTING FISH

CREDITS: Director: Stefan Schwartz Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Stuart Townsend, Dan Futternman & Peter Calpaldi GB 1997 (12)

INTRODUCTION: Billed as "The Best British Comedy Since Four Weddings and A Funeral" it is fortunately a lot better than that.

SYNOPSIS: Two con men, an American (Futternman) and a Brit (Townsend) encounter a girl (Beckinsale) in the course of one of their scams, and compete for her affections, but the girl is not what she seems. Conning them out of their ill-begotten gains before eventually teaming up with them for the scam of the century. Or was that "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"?

REVIEW: OK so it's not the most original plot in the world but the execution is flawless. A charming romantic comedy, of the kind that Hollywood forgot how to make in the sixties, infused with a healthy dose of 90's cynicism. Townsend demonstrates an impressive range, Beckinsale has finally found her breakthrough role and Futternman is the token American there for transatlantic appeal. And a cast of British Stalwarts from Annette Crosby to Nickolas Grace provide superb support along with my personal favourites Frankie, Sally and Angie the inflatable sex dolls.

Zany English romantic comedy with an American actor in a lead roll. Think of it as "Shooting Fish Called Wanda" and go see it. Much better than "Fierce Creatures".
