SOME PREFER CAKE

CREDITS: Director: Heidi Arneson USA 1997

INTRODUCTIONS: American independents don't come much more independent than this 16mm masterpiece, hence the lack of details in the credits section.

SYNOPSIS: Kira is your typical San-Fransiscan slacker, working a McJob at a comic warehouse and writing material for her successful sisters stand-up routine, while desperately trying to launch a career of her own. Her one true success is in becoming the bay areas premiere lesbian slut but this too is torn away from her when she falls in love with the girl of her dreams.

REVIEW: A slacker rom-com in the vein of one of my favourite films of last year "Chasing Amy", the film has something to appeal to everybody. In fact Arneson seems to be trying too hard to please all comers (no pun intended) with three main characters, one lesbian, one gay and one hetero. But the three play off each other excellently thanks in no small part to realistic writing and performances par excellence.
There is very little else for me to say about this movie, not because there isn't more to the movie, but simply because you will probably never get to see it. It will never receive a general release on cinema or video. Arneson undoubtedly has a great future ahead of her, unfortunately it is a future of producing great little movies that will only be seen by art house inhabitants like myself. Multiplexi - more screens more choice, providing the choice is which screen you want to see "Titanic" on.

Funny, charming and more enjoyable than cake anyday.
