I WENT DOWN

CREDITS: Director: Paddy Breathnach Cast: Brendan Gleeson, Peter McDonald, Tony Doyle & Peter Caffrey Ireland 1997 (15)

INTRODUCTION: The BBC certainly seem to know how to pick 'em. Their latest offering is an Irish crime, comedy, road movie. I'd like to take this opportunity to continue my recent lionising of the Irish film industry by going on and on about how good this movie is, but first the plot.

SYNOPSIS: Shortly after release from prison Git (McDonald) finds himself "owing" gangland boss Tom French (Doyle) big-time. Partnered with middle-aged thug Bunny (Gleeson), he finds himself sent off on a road trip to recover some money from a missing contact. They soon find themselves embroiled in gang war and a mystery that goes back quarter of a century.

REVIEW: A quirky, if somewhat violent film which crosses genres faster than Git and Bunny cross Ireland. Largely ignored by critics, distributors and audiences alike this gem from the Emerald isle deserves far more recognition than it managed to achieve.

The entire cast perform excellently, rendering their characters perfectly, and the chemistry is just right in every inter-relationship. The plot twists and turns without ever leaving the realms of possibility, constantly keeping you on your toes. All leading up to a wonderfully real denouement.

Perhaps doomed to be compare to Tarantino (am I obsessed or what?) this witty crime thriller lacks the thumping sound track and zeitgeisty cultural references one would expect from a QT film and must do its best to make up for it instead with wit and realism. Perhaps this is why it failed to make an impression upon its release?

Another fine Irish filum.
